Strep Throat or Just a Sore Throat?

Only a test can confirm strep, but these clues help:

More Likely Strep

  • Sore throat that starts suddenly
  • Fever and pain when swallowing
  • Red, swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches
  • Tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • Headache, stomach ache or vomiting in kids

Strep is most common in kids 5 to 15.

More Likely a Virus

  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Hoarse voice
  • Pink eye
  • Mouth sores

Viral sore throats do not get better with antibiotics, so testing saves you from medicine you do not need.

Comparison chart of strep throat symptoms versus viral sore throat symptoms in children
Strep and viral sore throats look alike at home. A rapid test, plus a backup culture for kids when needed, sorts it out.

What Happens at Your Visit

  • A quick throat swab for a rapid strep test, with results in minutes.
  • For kids and teens, a negative rapid test may be double checked with a throat culture, because rapid tests can miss some cases.
  • Flu and COVID testing in the same visit when fever and body aches point that way.
  • If it is strep, you leave with antibiotics, usually for 10 days, plus tips that actually help the pain.
  • If it is a virus, you get comfort care that works and clear signs to watch for.

Back to school or daycare: with strep, kids should stay home until they have no fever and have been on antibiotics for at least 12 to 24 hours. Check your school's policy, and we will give you a note if you need one.

Strep Test FAQs

How fast are rapid strep test results?

Results are ready within minutes, during your visit, so treatment can start the same day.

How much does a strep test cost?

With insurance, it depends on your plan. For self-pay patients, rapid strep, flu and COVID tests are $25 each, added to the visit. See our Prices page for current pricing.

Can adults get a strep test?

Yes. We test and treat kids, teens and adults, so parents with a sore throat can be seen in the same trip.

How long is strep contagious?

Strep spreads through coughs, sneezes and shared cups. People are much less contagious once they have been on antibiotics for at least 12 to 24 hours and have no fever.

Do I need an appointment?

Booking online gets you the shortest wait. Walk-ins are accommodated based on availability, and you can always call (832) 215-8884.
