Do I Need Stitches?

Small scrapes and shallow cuts usually heal well at home. A cut likely needs closing if it:

Gapes Open

The edges pull apart, or they do not stay together when you let go.

Looks Deep

It goes deeper than about a quarter inch.

Is on the Face

Face cuts heal best, with less scarring, when closed carefully.

Is Over a Joint

Cuts on a knuckle, knee or elbow pull open every time it bends.

Keeps Bleeding

It still bleeds after 10 minutes of firm, steady pressure.

Has Dirt Inside

Dirt, gravel or glass is stuck in the cut and will not rinse out.

Come in soon. Cuts are best closed within hours of the injury, while the wound is fresh. Waiting raises the chance of infection. See how our same-day walk-in visits work.

On the way, press firmly on the cut with a clean cloth for 10 minutes without peeking.

What Happens at Your Visit

  • We check the cut, test feeling and movement nearby and clean it well.
  • We numb the area before closing it, so most kids feel pressure or tugging rather than pain.
  • We pick the best way to close it: stitches for deeper cuts or spots that move a lot, skin glue for small, clean cuts whose edges come together easily, or wound strips for small, shallow cuts.
  • Before you leave, we go over tetanus shots, wound care and when stitches should come out.

Keeping kids calm. Stitches can feel scary, for kids and parents alike. You can usually stay right next to your child. We explain each step in kid-friendly words and welcome a favorite toy, show or song as a distraction.

Tetanus. Cuts, punctures and burns can let in tetanus germs. We review tetanus status at every wound visit and tell you if a booster is needed. PediSTAT does not give vaccines, so we will tell you where to get one, such as your child's pediatrician or your own doctor.

Worried a bit of glass or metal is stuck in the wound? We can check with an on-site X-ray during the same visit.

Minor Burns: What to Do Right Away

For first-degree burns, which are red and painful like a sunburn, and small second-degree burns, which blister:

  • Hold the burn under cool running water for 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Do not use ice, butter, oil or toothpaste.
  • Take off rings or tight clothing near the burn before it swells, unless it is stuck to the skin.
  • Leave blisters alone, and cover the burn loosely with a clean, nonstick bandage.
  • Come in for a burn that blisters, any burn on a baby, or a burn that still hurts a lot after cooling.

Wound Care at Home

  • Keep stitches clean and dry for the first 24 hours, then wash gently with soap and water and pat dry. Skip baths, pools and the beach until your provider says it is okay.
  • Do not put ointment on skin glue, and do not pick at glue or strips. They fall off on their own.
  • Face stitches usually come out in about 5 days. Others usually stay in about 1 to 2 weeks, longest over joints. We will tell you the exact timing.
  • Watch for infection: spreading redness, red streaks, swelling, warmth, pus, fever, or pain that gets worse after 2 days. Call us if you see any of these.

Go to the ER or call 911 if:

  • Heavy bleeding will not stop with firm pressure, or blood is spurting
  • You can see bone or deep tissue in the wound
  • There is numbness, or fingers or toes past the cut cannot move normally
  • An animal or human bite is deep
  • An object is stuck deep in the wound. Leave it in place
  • A burn is large, or a blistering burn is on the face, hands, feet, genitals or over a joint
  • A burn looks white, leathery or charred, or came from a chemical or electricity

Stitches, Cuts and Burns FAQs

How do I know if a cut needs stitches?

If it gapes open, looks deeper than about a quarter inch, is on the face or over a joint, or still bleeds after 10 minutes of firm pressure, it likely needs closing. When in doubt, have it checked.

Do stitches hurt?

We numb the area first, so most kids feel pressure or tugging rather than pain. The numbing may sting for a moment. We go slowly and keep you close.

Does my child need a tetanus shot?

We will check. In general, a booster is advised if it has been more than 10 years since the last tetanus shot, or more than 5 years for a dirty or deep wound. Kids who are behind on their shots may need one sooner. PediSTAT does not give vaccines, so we will tell you where to go.

Can you close a cut on the face?

Many simple face cuts can be closed here. Cuts through the lip edge, on the eyelid, or that are large or complex may need a specialist or the ER.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes. PediSTAT Urgent Care is in network with TRICARE, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana and Curative. We do not accept Medicaid, CHIP, Medicare or Community Health Choice. Paying yourself? Our transparent self-pay prices are listed on our Prices page.
