What We Treat

Common Cold

Runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, a scratchy throat and a low fever. Colds are viral and usually get better in 7 to 10 days.

Flu

Comes on fast with high fever, body aches, chills and exhaustion. Antiviral medicine works best within 48 hours, but kids under 5 or with asthma can still benefit later.

COVID-19

Fever, cough, sore throat, congestion or loss of taste and smell. We can test for COVID and flu in the same visit.

Sinus Infection

Facial pressure, congestion, thick nasal drainage and headache. Most sinus infections are viral and clear on their own.

Cough and Wheezing

Nebulizer breathing treatments onsite for wheezing and asthma flares, and a chest X-ray when pneumonia is a concern.

Ears and Throat Too

Colds often lead to ear infections and can hide strep, so we check ears and throats at every visit.

When Does a Sinus Infection Need Antibiotics?

Most sinus infections are caused by viruses, and antibiotics will not make them go away faster. A bacterial sinus infection is more likely when:

  • Symptoms last more than 10 days without getting better
  • There is a high fever of 102.2°F or more with thick nasal drainage for at least 3 days in a row
  • Someone starts to recover, then suddenly gets worse again

That is when antibiotics may help. Otherwise, we focus on what actually helps: saline rinses or drops, fluids, rest and the right fever and pain medicine for your child's age and weight.

Flu Season at PediSTAT

Flu and COVID usually pick up in November and December around Bay Area Houston. If your child wakes up with a sudden high fever and body aches, book early in the day. Testing within the first 48 hours gives you the most treatment options, and our onsite lab means you get answers before you leave.

What Happens at Your Visit

  • A full exam of ears, throat, sinuses and lungs.
  • Rapid flu, strep and COVID tests onsite when symptoms point that way.
  • A chest X-ray in the clinic if we are worried about pneumonia.
  • Nebulizer treatments for wheezing before you head home.
  • A clear plan for medicine, fluids, rest and when to come back.

Go to the ER or call 911 if you or your child:

  • Is working hard to breathe: ribs pulling in, nostrils flaring or grunting
  • Has blue or gray lips or face
  • Is a baby younger than 3 months with a temperature of 100.4°F or higher
  • Is very hard to wake or will not respond normally
  • Shows signs of dehydration, like no pee in 8 hours
  • Has a seizure
  • Gets better, then the fever or cough comes back worse
  • Has chest pain or pressure (adults)

Cold, Flu and Sinus FAQs

Should I see a doctor for a cold?

Most colds do not need a visit. Come in if a fever lasts more than 24 hours under age 2 or more than 3 days at age 2 and up, symptoms last more than 10 days, there is ear pain or trouble breathing, or things get worse after starting to get better. Any fever under 3 months needs the ER.

How do I know if it is the flu or COVID?

The symptoms overlap a lot, so testing is the best way to tell, though a negative rapid test does not always rule it out. We can test for both in one visit. For self-pay patients, each rapid test is $25.

Do you prescribe antibiotics for sinus infections?

Only when the pattern points to a bacterial infection, such as symptoms lasting more than 10 days or getting worse after improving. Antibiotics do not help colds, flu or COVID.

Can the whole family be seen?

Yes. We treat newborns, kids, teens and adults, so when the cold goes around the house, one trip can cover everyone.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes. PediSTAT Urgent Care is in network with TRICARE, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana and Curative. We do not accept Medicaid, CHIP, Medicare or Community Health Choice. Paying yourself? Our transparent self-pay prices are listed on our Prices page.
