RSV in Babies and Kids: Same-Day Care in Webster, TX

RSV often starts like a simple cold, but in babies and toddlers it can settle into the small airways and make breathing hard work. A board-certified pediatrician checks your child's breathing and oxygen level the same day and helps you know what to watch for.

What Is RSV?

RSV, short for respiratory syncytial virus, is a very common virus that spreads through coughs, sneezes and hands. Almost all children catch it by their second birthday, and it usually circulates in fall and winter.

In older kids and adults, RSV usually feels like a cold. In babies and young children, it can cause bronchiolitis: swelling and mucus in the tiny airways of the lungs, which can make breathing harder.

RSV Symptoms in Babies and Toddlers

Young Babies

Babies under 6 months may only seem fussy, sleepy or less interested in feeding, sometimes with no fever. The youngest can have pauses in their breathing.

Babies and Toddlers

A runny nose and cough, then fever, fast breathing or wheezing a few days in. Many eat and drink less than usual.

Older Kids and Adults

Usually cold symptoms: runny nose, cough, sore throat and a mild fever.

How RSV usually goes: it starts with a runny nose, then the cough builds. Days 3 to 5 are often the worst, and then most kids slowly improve over a week or two. The cough can hang on a few weeks longer.

Higher risk: babies born early, babies 6 months and younger, and children with lung or heart conditions or a weakened immune system. Bring these kids in sooner.

Signs Your Child Is Working Hard to Breathe

Lift your child's shirt and watch the chest and belly for a minute. Any of these means your child should be checked today, and severe or worsening signs need the ER:

Fast Breathing

Breathing much faster than usual, even while calm or asleep.

Belly Pulling In

The belly sucks in under the ribs, or the skin pulls in between the ribs, with each breath.

Flaring Nostrils

The nostrils spread wide with every breath in.

Grunting or Wheezing

A grunt with each breath out, or a whistling sound when breathing.

Pauses in Breathing

Breathing that stops for a pause, especially with a change in color. Call 911 right away.

Signs of Dehydration

No wet diaper in 8 hours, a dry mouth, no tears or a sunken soft spot on the head.

What Happens at Your Visit

  • A full exam, with your child on your lap whenever possible.
  • We listen to the lungs, count breaths and check oxygen level with a small, painless sensor on a finger or toe.
  • A chest X-ray in the clinic when we are worried about pneumonia.
  • Testing when it will change care, such as rapid flu or COVID tests. We do not offer a rapid RSV test.
  • A plan for home, or help getting to the hospital right away if your child needs oxygen or closer watching.

There is no medicine that cures RSV. Antibiotics do not work on viruses, and for most babies with RSV, breathing treatments and steroids do not help either. Your provider will decide if your child is an exception, such as an older child with asthma.

Home Care for RSV

  • Before feeds and sleep, put a few saline drops in the nose, then gently suction with a bulb syringe or nasal aspirator.
  • Offer smaller, more frequent breast milk or formula feeds, which are easier for a stuffy baby.
  • Run a cool-mist humidifier in the room, and clean it every day.
  • For fever or discomfort, use acetaminophen (3 months and up) or ibuprofen (6 months and up), dosed by weight. Never give aspirin to children or teens.
  • Skip over-the-counter cough and cold medicines for young children.
  • Keep your baby away from smoke, and keep them sleeping on their back on a flat, empty crib surface, even when stuffy.

Hearing a barky, seal-like cough instead? That sounds more like croup. Not sure if it is RSV, flu or COVID? See our flu and COVID testing page, or read our fever care guide.

Go to the ER or call 911 if your child:

  • Is younger than 3 months and has a temperature of 100.4°F or higher
  • Has pauses in breathing
  • Has blue or gray lips, tongue or face
  • Is struggling to breathe: belly pulling in under the ribs, nostrils flaring, grunting or head bobbing
  • Is breathing so fast that they cannot feed or drink
  • Shows signs of dehydration, like no wet diaper in 8 hours or no tears
  • Is very sleepy, limp or hard to wake

RSV FAQs

Do you have a rapid RSV test?

No. RSV is usually diagnosed with a careful exam, and home care is the same whether or not a test confirms it. We check breathing and oxygen level, and we test for other illnesses, like flu or COVID, when it will change care.

How long does RSV last?

Most children start to get better within 1 to 2 weeks, and symptoms are often worst around days 3 to 5. The cough can linger a few weeks longer.

When can my child go back to daycare?

In general, once your child has had no fever for 24 hours without fever medicine and symptoms are getting better. RSV spreads easily, so check your daycare's policy.

Can RSV be prevented?

Handwashing, keeping babies away from people with colds and avoiding smoke all help. PediSTAT does not give vaccines or immunizations, so ask your child's pediatrician about RSV protection for babies.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes. PediSTAT Urgent Care is in network with TRICARE, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana and Curative. We do not accept Medicaid, CHIP, Medicare or Community Health Choice. Paying yourself? Our transparent self-pay prices are listed on our Prices page.
