Flu, COVID or Just a Cold?

These viruses look a lot alike, especially in the first day or two. Here are the usual clues:

Common Cold

  • Starts slowly
  • Runny or stuffy nose and sneezing
  • Scratchy throat
  • Low fever or none
  • Tired, but still up and about

Flu

  • Hits suddenly, often within hours
  • Fever and chills
  • Body aches and headache
  • Dry cough and sore throat
  • Wiped out, often stuck in bed
  • Vomiting or diarrhea, more often in kids

COVID-19

  • Can start slowly or suddenly
  • Fever or chills
  • Cough, sore throat and congestion
  • Tiredness and body aches
  • New loss of taste or smell, which is more common with COVID

The symptoms overlap so much that an exam alone often cannot tell them apart, and you can have flu and COVID at the same time. A quick test is the best way to know.

When to Get Tested

  • A fever, chills, body aches or cough that came on suddenly, especially in fall and winter.
  • Someone close to you tested positive, and now you or your child feels sick.
  • You or your child is at higher risk for complications, or you live with someone who is, like a new baby or an older relative.

Why Testing Early Matters

According to the CDC, flu antiviral medicine works best when it is started within 2 days of the first symptoms. It can ease symptoms, shorten the illness and lower the chance of complications. The CDC recommends it for people at higher risk and for anyone who is very sick, and for them it may still help after that 2-day window.

Some people at higher risk can also get COVID treatment, which needs to start within the first few days of symptoms. Your provider will check what makes sense for you.

Who Is at Higher Risk?

By Age and Stage

  • Children younger than 5, especially those younger than 2
  • Adults 65 and older
  • People who are pregnant or gave birth in the last 2 weeks

By Health History

  • Asthma or other lung disease
  • Heart disease, diabetes or kidney disease
  • A weakened immune system
  • Brain, nerve or developmental conditions
  • Kids and teens on long-term aspirin therapy

What Happens at Your Visit

  • A quick nose swab for a rapid flu test, a COVID test or both, with results during your visit.
  • An exam of ears, throat and lungs, plus a rapid strep test if a sore throat points that way.
  • A chest X-ray in the clinic if we are worried about pneumonia.
  • If it is flu, we talk through whether antiviral medicine is right for you or your child.
  • A clear plan for home, plus a work or school note if you need one.

Please note: PediSTAT does not give flu shots, COVID shots or any other vaccines. Ask your regular doctor or your child's pediatrician about the yearly flu shot.

Home Care and Getting Back to School or Work

  • Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Small, frequent sips work well for kids who feel sick.
  • Acetaminophen (3 months and up) or ibuprofen (6 months and up) can ease fever and aches. Dose by weight, and never give aspirin to children or teens.
  • Honey can soothe a cough in kids older than 1. Never give honey to a baby younger than 1.
  • Stay home until you have had no fever for at least 24 hours without fever medicine and your symptoms are getting better overall. For the next 5 days, take extra care with handwashing and covering coughs. Schools and employers may have their own rules.

Go to the ER or call 911 if you or your child:

  • Has trouble breathing, is breathing very fast, or the ribs pull in with each breath
  • Has blue or gray lips or face
  • Has chest pain or pressure that does not go away
  • Is a baby younger than 3 months with a temperature of 100.4°F or higher
  • Is confused, very hard to wake or not acting like themselves when awake
  • Has a seizure
  • Shows signs of dehydration, like no pee in 8 hours, a dry mouth or no tears
  • Starts to get better, then the fever or cough comes back worse

Flu and COVID Testing FAQs

How fast are flu and COVID test results?

Rapid tests give results in minutes, so you have answers and a plan before you leave the clinic.

Can I get a flu and COVID test at the same visit?

Yes. When symptoms could be either one, we test for both at once.

Can a rapid test miss the flu or COVID?

Yes, sometimes, especially very early in the illness. If your flu test is negative but your symptoms strongly point to flu, your provider may still treat it. For COVID, a repeat test a couple of days later can catch what the first one missed.

Do you give flu shots?

No. PediSTAT does not offer flu shots or any other vaccines. Your regular doctor or your child's pediatrician can help with the yearly flu shot.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes. PediSTAT Urgent Care is in network with TRICARE, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana and Curative. We do not accept Medicaid, CHIP, Medicare or Community Health Choice. Paying yourself? Our transparent self-pay prices are listed on our Prices page.
